Wake Up and Write a Life Plan!
Picture a coconut bobbing in the ocean, totally dependent on where the tide takes it. Is this you? Do you feel like you are just drifting along life with no direction? When you ask yourself, “what next?” do you have any idea what IS next? If you don’t, maybe it’s time to figure out what you really want to do with your life. I used to be one of those bobbing coconuts until someone plucked me out of mediocrity by knocking some sense into me and taught me how to get my act together. The good news is that you don’t really need an ass kicking to get your life in order – it’s much simpler than you might think. To start, all you have to do is write a life plan.
Write a life plan?!? Yep, you need some life planning! Just like any business that needs to write a vision and mission statement to give it some direction, you also need to come up with a personal mission statement to guide you in your choices in life. Sounds too serious? Of course it is! Contrary to what laggards tell you, you do need to get serious if you want to find your way in life. All work and no play may make Jack a dull boy, but all play and no work keeps Jack stuck right where he is!
When you write a life plan, you will first need to evaluate yourself. What are your values, interests, inclinations, talents and capabilities? Now don’t get delusional! Don’t be like those dimwits that get dissed on that popular singing show because they’re trying to puff themselves up and pretend they can do more than they’re capable of. Take into account your responsibilities and roles in life. This self-assessment will help you in your life planning not just for your career, but in all areas of your life that matter to you: relationships, spirituality, leisure, personal growth, or even service to society if you’re one of those who have a higher conscience than us mere mortals.
Once you figure out what really drives you, start with your life planning. Visualize exactly what you want to happen in your life and write down your mission. Follow this up with tangible goals that will lead you to attain your dreams one step at a time. Trust me, this is the best way to clear out that fuzzy brain of yours and get your act together. You’ll find yourself become more motivated, confident and focused. But make sure you remain adaptable to any changes that may happen, so you don’t end up a disillusioned old fart.
The most successful people in the world focus their efforts on what they are really good at and what they love to do best. So get on with your life planning, figure out what drives you, act on it and join their ranks!

EXCELLENT article, Chris! I heard a “statistic” declaring that most people will spend 2 to 3 months planning a 1 week vacation, but never spend a moment planning the rest of their lives. I remember asking you once how to get my business going:
1. write out a plan
2. crunch the numbers of the plan – make sure it works
3. do the plan
4. quit fuckin’ around!
I like that last instruction!
My comment/question is this: do you have thoughts on the fuel for success? In other words – do you have any articles talking about eating, nutrition and self care that supports the lifestyle of highly productive business and personal lifestyle?
It seems to me that it’s good to have a body that can actually DO the actions that are demanded of such a lifestyle.
Other than that, I heard about your blog through word of mouth and I wanted to check you out. Good job on including random pictures with your articles. My blog could use more visuals.
