Problem Solving: Think Outside Your Box
I think it’s safe to say that we all have problems sometimes. We’ve all found ourselves at one time or another faced with issues or stuck in shitty situations we don’t know how to solve. What do you do when you find yourself so bogged down with the daily stress and pressure of jobs, money, bills, kids, etc.? How do you keep your sanity? I used to be the guy who got so stressed out over everything that I didn’t even know what to do with myself. Then one day it hit me. Why worry so much? What does it solve? I’m not telling you to totally ignore your problems… but try solving them in a different way. A way that won’t eventually kill you.
Let’s say you’re at work. The boss is really riding you about some project, you’ve got clients chewin’ out your ass, the wife is calling bitching about God knows what… How do you deal with the stress of it all? Take a deep breath, take one step at a time, and set priorities. Deal with the clients. Find out what pissed them off. Then, take a step back and think for a minute. Get into their eyes and minds. See it from their angles and perspectives, and rework your strategy or your product in a way that makes them happy.
Your boss? Go out for a drink with the asshole and sit down and talk about why he is so pissed about the project… and what you could do to get it done the way he wants. You (and him) are both more likely to be calm in a social setting. You can be honest with each other and you will be able to get more accomplished and reach an agreement.
And the wife? Bring her home something special, or find a way to do something you normally wouldn’t do. You also need to step back and try to see things from her perspective, just as you did with your clients. Think outside the box. Think outside YOUR box. Let go of your preconceptions, stress and worries, and try to see things as an outside observer might for a moment.
You may have to do some mental exercises to get the creative juices flowing in order for this to work, but in the meantime, when you find yourself freaking out over whatever… Just stop! Get away for a bit. Go exercise. Go have a drink with your buddies. Go for a walk on the beach. Go do whatever it is you like to do to help clear your mind. Refresh yourself. Then, when you are ready, sit down and really think about the problem.
Don’t ponder what you could have said or done instead. That’s just a waste of friggin’ time. What’s done is done. There’s nothing you can do about it now. Instead, spend your time brainstorming alternative solutions and thinking outside the box. Thinking outside the box will help you get in touch with your creativity. Getting in touch with your creativity will help you think up new and innovative ideas. New and innovative ideas will help you worry less and solve more problems.
