Its Ok To Be Crazy

chrisrugh.com work hardI’m not the kind of guy who keeps an 9 to 5 job, or five days a week job schedule, but what I do have is the capacity to produce great amounts of work when needed. What we have to understand is that most of the people who made their fortunes did not work for a company but made their fortune on their own.

Here’s a good story that I heard but is unsubstantiated. Its about Ted Turner and his working habits.

The rumor was that Ted Turner was a bit bi-polar. It says that whenever he wanted to work on a new project or venture he would purposely go off his medicine and then work for days and weeks non stop with little or no sleep. When he was ready to crash, his wife would slip some medicines in his meals when he wasn’t looking until he would eventually stabilize.

You’ve got to love the guy, here’s a guy who’s a classic example of one who doesn’t follow rules but one who has structure. Working for days and weeks without end to produce something is not a rule, what he has is the structure of putting in great amounts of work and producing solid results so he can enjoy the benefits of his work and have loads of personal time.

But the key element here is that he goes into a manic state and does incredible amounts of things in a short manner of time and I highly recommend this. I don’t recommend it to that particular point, but the basic idea is to have a balance in the end. Sometimes have to go all out and put in as much focused effort into whatever you are  doing.

“Objects that are in motion will always stay in motion”, when you are pushing that rock up the hill you don’t want that motion to stop and you want to keep it moving. Momentum is one of the great equalizers, it is easier to keep it moving than to constantly stop and start pushing again as much of the energy is expended in the that initial push.

Don’t be afraid to work 80 hours today so that you can work 8 hours a week for the next 3 months or even 3 years.

Today I’ll do what others won’t so tomorrow I can do what others can’t. (Don’t know who originally said it, but I love it.) Another great article, Chris!
