I Hate My J.O.B.!

By Chris Rugh | August 27, 2010

dreamstime CR 2010 8 27 150x150 I Hate My J.O.B.!I spell job, J.O.B.! I spell it this way because I made a decision a long time ago that I would not hold a J.O.B. any longer than necessary. As soon as I was able, I set out to own my own business, determined not to hold down a 9 to 5 J.O.B. It just isn’t my style. Life can take some unexpected turns, and life planning can be a valuable tool for dealing with your J.O.B., making your J.O.B. better or leaving for a more rewarding venture.

So, what do you do if you hate your job? Plan to get out of it or take some positive steps to make it better. Basically, short of quitting and becoming one of the millions of unemployed out there today, these are your two choices. Here is where life planning comes in. Sit down and evaluate the reasons why you hate your job. Everyone has things that they love to do and things that they hate. Ask yourself: “If I could be doing anything in the world, what would I most want to do?” You may just be in the wrong career field. You may have to take classes, get a certification or get a degree to make the move to another field, but there is plenty that you can do to move forward. Check into your workplace’s education assistance program. Some companies are quite happy to help you get an education and move up within the company, and many of your college courses can prepare you for the switch to a different field down the line. Federal financial aid is available to help where you fall short on funds, and student loans usually come with much lower interest rates and don’t require repayment until you have completed your degree. You may find that with your newfound direction, you have a whole new attitude.

On the other hand, if it’s the people that you hate, it may be time to start looking for another job. I never advocate leaving one job without having another, so plan on how you will need to go about making the move. Now is the time revisit, update and revamp your résumé, especially if you have been in your current job for awhile or if you’ve had numerous jobs that may look bad to a prospective employer. For example: rather than listing places of employment, you can list skills and the number of years that you spent doing that particular thing (i.e.: Cashier, 1999 to 2010). Almost all positions will also require you fill out an ‘official’ application, so having a résumé that capitalizes on your strengths and downplays the negatives (like holding six jobs from 1999 to 2010) can make or break you.

Adequate life planning from a much earlier age might have landed you a job that is more within your strengths, your abilities and your natural aptitude, but I believe that it is never too late for positive action towards a much happier life. It is never too late to embark on a new adventure, but the sooner you start that journey the better. How many more days do you want to waste hating your J.O.B.?

I think, that you are not right. I am assured. I suggest it to discuss.
