How to Relax in a Revved Up World
The world has become so revved up we have almost forgotten how to relax. We are all running around like Energizer bunnies that just keep on going and going. How society has come to define success sets us up to work harder and harder in order to have it all. All the material luxuries, prestige and more…more stress, that is.
Aside from our self-imposed pressures, our senses are overloaded with the bombardment of stimuli. We automatically absorb all the things we see, hear, and smell. Our gadgets have also become a constant source of stress. Sure, it makes a lot of things easier, but it also keeps us “on” 24/7.
People who have the pedal-to-the-metal most of the time may get more things done, but once we bust our fuse, getting burned out is no fun at all. Our productivity takes a plunge. Our bodies can only take so much, and we need to take care of them. We need to learn how to relax. Figuring out need not be as elaborate as going on a weekend retreat in some spa resort. (Although I’m all up for that!) It can be as simple as taking 5-10 minute breaks when you feel your stress levels are going through the roof. Take some quiet time for yourself. Turn off your gadgets. Turn off your monkey mind. When you go out, leave your Blackberry at home. When you go to sleep, turn off your cell phone. Get a good night’s sleep. It is very important for your body. This is the time when the body recoups from the day’s stresses and rejuvenates itself for another day.
Pampering yourself at the end of the day with a warm bath or turning on some relaxing music will signal the body to relax. Do some communing with nature. Exercise also reduces stress as long as you don’t overdo it. Hell, do something you LOVE to do that will keep your mind off the daily grind!
Learn how to relax by the choices you make throughout the day. When you turn on your car radio, don’t turn your dial to that jaded DJ that will drain positive energy out of you. If you are going to set up an appointment, arrange to meet at a place with a relaxing ambiance. But the best way to reduce stress is by changing the way you react to things around you. As they say, “mind over matter; if you don’t really mind, it won’t really matter.” Don’t waste another thought on the jerk that cut you off on the road or how the boss pissed you off with his dumb ass comments. In the scope of things, minor irritants are just a grain of sand in the ocean of life.
And most importantly, stay positive! Take time to laugh. That beats all other stress relievers!
