Go Theory (Part 2): Quality people

By Chris Rugh | October 27, 2009

In order to have a biz life where you’re gone most, if not all, of the time you need hire smart. Here are a few tips for hiring quality people.

  1. Fire quick, hire slow. Take time and invest money to in making the best choices, right out of the gate. Use personality tests, and have more than three people interview the candidates. Watch out for thinking that you can spot the right person right away — especially if the last few hires you made turned out to totally suck.
  2. Hire smart. If they aren’t smarter than you…don’t hire them.
  3. Create great employees. If you’re not hiring the cream of the crop (due to your industry or job description), figure out a way to turn the people you hire into the best. McDonald’s is a great example of this approach. They tend to hire the “unhireable” and turn them into great employees. It’s not the people so much as the amazing business system they’ve created.
