I bet you can’t guess what Jane Fonda and I have in common?
Give up? It’s all about rehearsing. Let me explain. I like to surf…I’m not talking about with a surfboard…I’m talking about with a remote. So the other night, when I was surfing along…who catches my eye, but actress, child of Hollywood royalty, and activist, Jana Fonda. She’s out there pedaling her newest book. I’m half listening to her interview, but something relevant caught my attention. She was asked a question and responded about how she “rehearses the future.” I thought this was a clever thing for an actress to say, ‘rehearsing.’ But it also got me to thinking about business coaching.
What is business coaching?
If you haven’t tried it, business coaching is an incredible tool for your business. If you’ve tried it…you know I’m right. A business coach is someone who walks alongside you and/or your inner circle workplace team and helps you ‘rehearse’ the future, so that you can create the future you want for yourself and your company. It’s invaluable!
I’ve spoken many times about my business coach. She regularly kicks my ass…and I pay her handsomely to do it! She helps me to:
Vision and decide where I want my business to go even 10- 20 years into the future. My business coach helps me to ‘see’ and to ‘rehearse’ how things are going to be from the “big picture”.
Brainstorm and verbalize ideas about the millions of things I can do, or may want to do, to make my business successful. My business coach is a sounding board for me to think creatively…there are no dumb ideas.
Prioritize the top 5 or 10 things that my business needs to accomplish. The problem with many entrepreneurs is that they have a great product or concept, but they’ve got no plan or way to organize and prioritize what to do first, second, or third, and they don’t have a clue about what is important to their future business success. A business coach guides you through this process.
Set goals which are attainable benchmarks and have deadlines, so that I know when the business has accomplished the goals. A business coach helps you move forward into the future, they don’t let you get stuck or bogged down when obstacles arise or set-backs occur.
Create a ‘To Do’ List of the ongoing, day to day, week to week projects or tasks which I need to accomplish or delegate to my team. A business coach helps you to have multiple levels of future focus, on both the ‘big picture’ vision, and the day to day, week to week details.
Brand the existing business, and develop branding for new concepts or products. This is an aspect of business rehearsal which is crucial to the survival and competitiveness of every successful business. You have to have the help of an outsider, who is an expert in business, to help you to know when you need to tweak or refresh your brand.
This is just an overview of the benefits of business coaching. It’s not an exhaustive list. I’ll tell you something about creating a business future. If you want your company to have longevity and staying power like Jane Fonda, you need to rehearse. So think about it, but don’t procrastinate. Create the business future you’ve dreamed of…hire a business coach.
